From the beginning of creation, God provided the earth with plants and herbs for the benefit of humanity. In Genesis 1:29, the Lord declares, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” This scripture shows that natural plants and herbs were part of God’s original design to nourish and sustain us. Many cultures throughout history have relied on herbal remedies for healing, and Christianity acknowledges that all wisdom and resources for health ultimately come from God.
The Bible itself makes references to the healing properties of herbs and oils. For example, the Good Samaritan used olive oil and wine to treat wounds (Luke 10:34), and Revelation 22:2 speaks of the “leaves of the tree” being “for the healing of the nations.” These verses highlight that God can use His creation as instruments of healing. However, as Christians, we are reminded that while herbs may bring relief, true healing ultimately comes from God. Prayer, faith, and medicine can work together, as long as our trust remains in the Lord as the Great Physician.
It is important for Christians to approach herbal medicine with wisdom and discernment. Herbs should be used responsibly, avoiding superstitions or practices that contradict God’s Word. When embraced with prayer and thanksgiving, natural remedies can be a blessing — a reminder that God has placed healing resources all around us. As we care for our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), we must seek balance: using what God has provided in nature while also seeking His guidance and the wisdom of trained professionals.
